happy 70 to the OG disney park @disneyland 💖 w happy 70 to the OG disney park @disneyland 💖

while we’ve only made it here once, she sure has a special charm of its own.

disneyland wins with highly sensitive & neurodivergent kids 🏆:

• better weather
• more nostalgia
• less walking
• more hotel/airbnb options nearby
• smaller footprint
• easy to make it a trip beyond just theme parks
• better “it’s a small world” facade

i hope we can go back soon!

have you been to disneyland yet?

summer can be a little cray, as a mom. i find th summer can be a little cray, as a mom.

i find that if i am NOT intentional, we often flip flop between travels, exciting outings, summer camps…and staying in PJs all day rotting on the couch 🫠🤪

but it’s actually really helpful for kids, especially neurodivergent ones, to have SOME semblance of a routine or flow to their days.

the kids knowing what to expect can be the game changer in whether you end up with a ton of dysregulated behaviors or not.

for us, as a homeschooling family, we’ve loved incorporating the @brain_quest summer workbooks as a summer “project” to keep some routine in our days. and we’ve been able to bring these along for our recent trip to a midwest lake house (@thesanctuaryongoldenlake), keeping routines even away from home.

do YOU keep any summer routines with your family?

as a mom with a highly sensitive child, i get it. as a mom with a highly sensitive child, i get it.

the worries about overstimulation, if they’ll be able sleep in a new place, actually getting TO the destination without meltdowns, and finding food they’ll actually eat… etc.

it’s a lot. and it’s really hard.

but if the desire to travel and explore, bit by bit, is in your heart… you’re in the right place.

not all parenting & travel advice is the same.

so know that the tips & info i share here is from the perspective of a mom who GETS it. and i’m in your corner cheering you on!

yes, i like disney. but i also like a lake vacat yes, i like disney.

but i also like a lake vacation.

or an all-inclusive.

or a national park visit.

or a city filled with museums.

or a cruise.

there isn’t just one way to travel, and unlike what many seem to share on social media, disney isn’t superior to all.

my middle child has actually been pushing back lately about all the disney trips we’ve taken over the years—“all we do is go to disney 😡”

and part of me felt mad (and a little sad..) with that privileged statement. it’s a dream for many families to visit! but i realized his underlying sentiment is the desire to explore other places too.

and that’s ok 👌

if you’re new, hiiii! i’m susan, a mom of 3, navigating neurodivergent parenting AND travel to disney and beyond. stick around for my tips and honest insights and free resources—i am NOT here to sell you a vacation ✌️

he was so scared 😳 if you’re not familiar, t he was so scared 😳

if you’re not familiar, this little attraction is tucked away next to journey into imagination with figment.

it features 3 “shorts”, or short films, and there are lots of cool effects used.

however, my toddler didn’t love this…

the first short is called “get a horse” featuring mickey & minnie. he HATED this one, as he’s pretty scared of pete and all his mischief.

the second is “piper” featuring a little bird who is scared of the ocean. there were moments when the sounds and rumblings of the ocean waves really startled my kiddo.

the last one is called “feast”, which features a man and a dog who helps him find love. he was ok with this one BUT was already traumatized by the first two 🫣

my older kids enjoyed it but not my littlest. it’s also a great A/C break if you need to get inside with minimal waiting.

is this something you’ll include in YOUR EPCOT itinerary? 🤨

and yet we keep trying 🙃 always keeping it rea and yet we keep trying 🙃

always keeping it real over here. i don’t like pretending like everything goes smoothly when we travel.

and the struggle is another level if you’re a neurodivergent family with lots of sensitivities & triggers 😬

but avoiding the hard isn’t the answer.

practice makes progress, so we keep trying, learning, failing, pivoting, and trying again.

i don’t know if it’s my age, but whenever we travel somewhere without easy access to korean food… all i want is rice and kimchi when we get home 🍚

travel is fun and all but sometimes the familiarity of home is what we crave. and there’s nothing wrong with that.

not that my needs don’t matter. but i find tha not that my needs don’t matter.

but i find that when my kids are having a good time, then i’m in better place too.

so yes, i’m going to lean into the things that maybe i wouldn’t do if i was on my own.

not with underlying resentment—because that defeats the whole point.

but truly because when they’re regulated and happy, i can actually RELAX myself.

and that’s the kinda vacay vibes i’m about.

it’s still AAPI heritage month and i wanted to s it’s still AAPI heritage month and i wanted to share a little bit of my own story.

growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood and living in a time when korea was pretty unknown, it was so hard being “different”.

i wished away the different-ness of me and did all i could to blend in. i refused to speak korean in public, fearing i would be viewed as a foreigner. all that masking resulted in a form of self-hate as i tried to diminish that side of my identity.

but this is where representation and inclusion can make such a HUGE difference.

to feel seen, known, and accepted.

i’m thankful that my kids are growing up in a time where they can be less ashamed of their asian heritage, and see a bit of their culture on display on a disney world attraction (…although there is still work to be done, no doubt 😓)

and i guess that’s why i’m here advocating for accessible travel, for families with highly sensitive & neurodivergent kids to feel seen. that you’re not alone in these struggles of trying to find your way through a neurotypical world.

inclusion matters.

no matter how weird, different, awkward you feel… you are seen and valued. just as you are.

the more we know, the better. for highly sensiti the more we know, the better.

for highly sensitive and/or neurodivergent kids, knowing what to expect in a new place can make ALL the difference.

what we do whenever we have an upcoming trip is: SCHEDULE A TRIP TO THE LIBRARY.

we check out as many books as we can about our destination. 📕📗📘📙

not only is it a great learning opportunity, it helps so much with the transition to vacation 😊

for disney trips, we read a lot from our disney character encyclopedia AND we love the little golden book series. ✨

no need for FOMO. this is especially true if you no need for FOMO.

this is especially true if you have a sensory sensitive, anxious or otherwise neurodivergent child or family member.

lean into the things that draw them in, even if it’s unconventional or not listed in the “top 10 must do’s” that some creator made up.

this is why one disney park plan doesn’t fit all this is why one disney park plan doesn’t fit all.

more context: we go to disney world about once a year. the kids have already been on those big hitter attractions, so it wasn’t a must. we just wanted to enjoy our day together, and part of that meant making sure the kids weren’t getting overtired.

sure, this is super unconventional 🤷🏻‍♀️ but it worked for us.

i’d also argue that some of those attractions are sensory overload and might not be a high priority for you anyway (looking at you remy 👀)

parenting should just be called “pivoting” 🙃

the most important skill i’ve learned as a mom is to be flexible and not be married to my plans or expectations.

whether it’s vacation. their schooling. what they eat. their sleep schedules. their interests.

untangling my plans & hopes from their own individuality is a constant work in progress.

but not gonna lie, my arm is about to fall asleep being naptrapped. 🫠🫠

still no guarantee of a meltdown-free vacay. but still no guarantee of a meltdown-free vacay.

but these little adjustments made a HUGE difference.

now that my kids are getting older, the “getting them involved” piece is becoming really fun. and it starts to feel like we all have a sense of ownership of our trip! 💕

kids SHOULD be able to take up space anywhere. b kids SHOULD be able to take up space anywhere.

but the number of dirty looks and judgment you get as a parent when your kids are “misbehaving” can send your stress levels through the roof.

and this is where disney differs.

it doesn’t matter if you’re at the grand flo or riviera. kids are welcomed. and no one’s gonna frown upon kids being kids.

disney world is where i’ve met some of the kindest strangers (guests & cast members) who have helped me during those stressful moments of vacation.

and that’s where some of that “magic” we all talk about is. 💖

is it you too? vacation might mean escaping your is it you too?

vacation might mean escaping your regular mom load.. but laundry doesn’t magically disappear and reappear clean.

one thing i HATE when i come home from a family trip is having 134863 loads of laundry to run to catch up.

so i make it a point to do a load (or two) while on vacation.

how do YOU help relieve some of that post-vacation mom mental load?

this is the key 🔑 ✨ADJUSTING YOUR DEFINITION this is the key 🔑

✨ADJUSTING YOUR DEFINITION OF FUN✨

realizing that what YOU think is fun won’t always be fun for your kids is a hard pill to swallow sometimes.

but if you want a less stressful vacay vibe, this is so important.

lean into the things they enjoy…

…and be prepared to pivot for the things that aren’t received very well.

just because something is listed as the “top 10 kid-friendly things to do at [insert destination]”, doesn’t mean it’s something your family will ACTUALLY like doing.

and that’s ok.

if you’re on the same page, hope you stick around for more family-friendly vacation & disney tips! ✨

my 3yo is OBSESSED with lightning mcqueen. even my 3yo is OBSESSED with lightning mcqueen.

even though we were staying at grand floridian, we made it a priority to head over to art of animation on our rest day.

we decided to take the bus to hollywood studios ➡️ transferred to the skyliner to get to art of animation.

alternate route: monorail to magic kingdom, and take the bus to art of animation.

the life size car characters and theming is out of this world!

the other themed areas include: little mermaid, lion king, & finding nemo

will you visit art of animation the next time you’re at disney world? 🤔
it’s the little things that keep me coming back. it’s the little things that keep me coming back.
